
The Government of India has appointed experienced diplomat Vipul as the country’s next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Presently he is serving as the Ambassador of India to Qatar. Announcing his appointment, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that he will take up his new assignment soon. Let us know who is diplomat Vipul.
Diplomat Vipul is a senior officer of the 1998 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). He has considerable experience in the affairs of the Gulf region and West Asia. During his career he has served in many important Indian missions including Cairo, Colombo, Geneva and Dubai. While holding these posts, he worked on various subjects like political and economic relations, development cooperation, international security, disarmament and media matters.
Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs
Between 2014 and 2017, Vipul was also Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. He served as the Consul General of India in Dubai from 2017 to 2020. After returning from Dubai, Vipul worked as Joint Secretary (Gulf) in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2020 to 2023. During this period, he played an important role in strengthening India’s strategic and economic relations with the Gulf countries.
Appointed as India’s Ambassador to Qatar in 2023
In August 2023, he was appointed India’s Ambassador to Qatar. Now he has been appointed the country’s next ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Given his long experience and regional understanding, it is believed that he will give a new dimension to India’s strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia.
Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi
Along with diplomatic experience, Vipul also has a very strong educational background. He obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in 1994. After this he did MBA from Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad.
Vipul’s appointment comes at a time when the geopolitical circumstances in West Asia are changing rapidly and Saudi Arabia is further strengthening its role at the regional and global level. In such a situation, this appointment is considered very important for India-Saudi relations.
India-Saudi relations will strengthen
Relations between India and Saudi Arabia have strengthened significantly in the last few years. Energy security, trade, investment and defense cooperation are the main pillars of the relationship between the two countries. It is believed that the appointment of Vipul, who has a deep understanding of the Gulf region, will further strengthen the cooperation between the two countries.
