Assembly elections are to be held in Punjab early next year. Political turmoil has intensified there also. Congress, which is trying to return to power, has already started making strategies for the elections. Sources associated with Congress say that the party will not give ticket to any MP in Punjab on the lines of Kerala. This plan of Congress was successful in Kerala and it was successful in returning to power after a long wait of 10 years.
Sources say that Congress will not give assembly ticket to any of its MPs in the general elections to be held in Punjab. It has also been said that all the big leaders (MPs) will be asked to win maximum seats in the areas under their influence. The idea behind this is to avoid internal factionalism in elections.
No quota for big leaders in seat distribution
The party wants to decide in advance that there will be no quota system for any big leader regarding seat distribution in the assembly elections. In its place, candidates will be selected on the basis of party survey and ground report of in-charge and co-in-charge.
It is also being said that the party is considering giving a chance to a large number of new faces in the elections. With the intention of strengthening the party in the state, more than half of the tickets can be given to new faces. There is also speculation that during ticket allocation, the ‘one family one person ticket’ formula will be implemented, that is, only one person from one political family will be given the ticket.
Congress’s good performance in Kerala
Last month, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power in the assembly elections in Kerala with a major victory. Taking an important decision, the party leadership had decided not to field any of its MPs to contest the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and had expressed confidence only on the state leaders for the elections.
In the elections, Congress-led UDF performed brilliantly and captured 102 seats, while LDF got 35 seats. NDA had won 3 seats. Congress alone had won 63 out of 140 seats.
