Social media platform Meta published a detailed blog on Tuesday, in which it explained its efforts to deal with content related to sexual exploitation of children on its apps. In this, AI-based detection, ad review system and action taken on a large scale were mentioned. The move came days after the government sent a notice to the social media company over reports of promoting such content in Instagram ads. Calling child exploitation a terrible crime, Meta said it works harder every day to fight such exploitation on and off its platform.
The company said, ‘We are aware of the recent news about Instagram ads in India that violated our policy against exploitation of children and we want to say clearly that we take these concerns seriously, we never want such content to appear on our platform and we are committed to improving our efforts to deal with it.’
More than 40 lakh accounts were deleted last year
Meta said that it is completely wrong to say that it knowingly and thoughtfully shows such advertisements to people who have children and which are based on wrong interests. Meta said, ‘On the contrary, we use technology that identifies accounts with suspicious activity related to children, and last year we automatically removed more than 4 million such accounts.’ Meta said it has further strengthened AI-based action against child exploitation, with new systems covering the languages spoken by 98 percent of people online.
Last year, it automatically removed more than 4 million suspicious accounts and 36 million pieces of content related to child exploitation across the world. In India, AI tools helped remove 1,60,000 accounts that posted suspicious links related to exploitative activity in the last six months. Meta further said that even before the issues came to its attention, its enforcement system had identified and shut down many of the policy-violating ads and the accounts behind them. “Our subsequent investigation led to additional action, including removing additional ads, closing accounts, and blocking URLs associated with content that violates our policies,” Meta said.
‘We deployed advanced AI detection tools’
Actually, Meta, a technology company headquartered in Menlo Park, California, is the owner of popular social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta said, ‘We have deployed advanced AI detection tools that identify when people post suspicious off-platform links along with other signals indicating child exploitative activity. In the last 6 months alone, 1,60,000 accounts were deleted in India due to this.
Strict notice to Meta regarding CSEAM
According to PTI, government sources said that Meta’s official reply to the notice sent on Saturday is awaited. He said the government’s focus will be on the corrective steps and actions taken by the company to address all concerns. Last week, the government had issued a strict notice to Meta regarding content related to child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEAM) in paid advertisements on Instagram.
Order to stop such content
MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) had ordered Instagram to stop all advertisements and content promoting CSEAM and facilitating access to it and also sought a detailed explanation within 7 days. The action came after IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav directed MeitY officials to summon Metra over allegations of promoting content related to child sexual abuse through Instagram ads.
The regulatory probe by the ministry began following a BBC report alleging that Meta’s recommendation algorithm was promoting videos containing child sexual abuse material, exposing serious shortcomings in safeguards. The BBC investigation also found that such ads were appearing on Facebook and Instagram, despite Meta’s advertising policies explicitly prohibiting nudity and sexually explicit content.
Used to reach Telegram channels users
It is alleged that Instagram showed paid ads containing words like ‘rape video’ and ‘child video’, which took users to Telegram channels where such content was allegedly being sold. In a blog post Tuesday, Meta said its ad review process uses automated systems and human reviewers to detect and remove ads that violate our policies, but acknowledged that no system can catch every violation.
According to the company, ads are tested before they run and are continually reviewed and re-reviewed, and users can also report suspected violations. Meta said it also monitors advertiser behavior in addition to individual ads, and may reject or ban the business accounts, ad accounts, Pages, and user accounts of advertisers who violate its policies.
Meta gave this clarification
This social media company said that it is continuously strengthening its ad review system and the process of implementing rules to keep bad people away from its platform and to better protect the users. The company said, ‘We are committed to keeping bad people away from our platform and are constantly improving our systems to stay ahead of them. The safety of people using our platforms is at the heart of how we create and enforce our advertising standards.
Taking a zero-tolerance approach to the issue, Meta said it has detailed and robust policies against child nudity, abuse and exploitation, including soliciting or sharing images of children and inappropriate communications.
