After Air India, IndiGo’s big bet! War among airlines will increase due to low price tickets

July 1, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The country’s largest airline IndiGo has launched a new and affordable fare option for those passengers who travel only with cabin bags. The airline has introduced a new economy fare named ‘IndiGo Lite’. Its booking has started from July 1, while travel at this fare can be done for flights on or after July 15. This facility will be available only on direct booking platforms like IndiGo’s website and mobile app.

What will you get in Lite fare?

IndiGo Lite fares will be applicable on all non-stop flights, domestic and international. In this ticket, passengers will be allowed to carry cabin bags up to 7 kg. Along with this, auto-assigned seat will also be given without any extra charge. However, if a passenger wants additional facilities like checked-in baggage, seat of his choice, meals or priority boarding, he will have to pay separately for these.

You will also get benefit from BluChip loyalty program

The airline has clarified that passengers taking Lite fare will also continue to get the benefits of its BluChip loyalty program. This means that passengers will be able to earn loyalty points on this ticket also and will also be able to redeem them in future.

New bet amid rising costs

Operating cost pressure on Indian airlines has increased in recent months. Due to geopolitical tensions related to Iran, crude oil prices have increased, making Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) expensive. ATF constitutes the largest part of the total operating expenses of airlines. Apart from this, restrictions on some international air routes and long flights are also increasing the costs of airlines. At such a time, this new low priced fare is being considered as a strategy to attract customers.

Air India has also brought such a plan

It is noteworthy that last month Air India had also started basic economy fare for budget passengers, which does not include free meals. In such a situation, it is believed that competition in the Indian aviation market regarding low-cost fares may become more intense.

At present IndiGo has more than 440 aircraft in its fleet. The airline operates more than 2,100 flights daily and serves more than 95 domestic and 40 international destinations.
