There is a continuous period of crisis for Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee family. Now a court in West Medinipur district of West Bengal has issued an arrest warrant against Sumit Rai, a close aide of Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee, in a case related to land scam. Abhishek Banerjee himself also appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning in connection with the alleged scam related to teacher recruitment.
The arrest warrant was issued by the court on Monday after the investigators argued that despite repeated efforts, Sumit could not be traced. An officer told news agency PTI, “For the past several days, many of our teams have been busy searching for the accused. But he has not been traced yet and he is not cooperating in the investigation, so we requested the court for an arrest warrant. The court accepted our application.”
Sumit Roy filed petition in HC
Earlier on Monday, Sumit Rai approached Calcutta High Court and requested for anticipatory bail. His lawyer mentioned the matter before the bench of Justice Joy Sengupta. His application may be heard at the end of this week. Police are searching for Sumit in connection with a case registered at Salboni police station.
Investigators said Sumit’s name came up during the interrogation of former Medinipur MLA Sujoy Hazra, who was earlier arrested in the land scam case. As part of the search operation, a team of Salboni police station along with central forces reached Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat on Saturday last week. The investigators got the last known tower location of Sumit Rai’s mobile phone from that area and after waiting for several hours, the premises were searched.
Abhishek questioned in teacher recruitment scam
The senior officer said, “On the basis of technical information, searches were conducted at many places, but information about the accused could not be found.” On the same day, the police also raided Sumit’s in-laws’ house in Shrirampur in Hooghly district, but there was no success there either.
On the other hand, Mamata’s nephew and TMC leader Abhishek appeared before the Enforcement Directorate today in connection with the alleged teacher recruitment scam. The development came a day after the state CID team questioned Abhishek in a case of alleged forged signatures related to the appointment of the leader of opposition in the Assembly.
An official associated with the case said that Abhishek came to the CGO Complex office of ED in Kolkata in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers in primary schools.
