Elon Musk is going to bet big on Cursor, the AI company of 25-year-old Indian-origin entrepreneur Aman Sangar. SpaceX has announced the acquisition of Cursor in an all-stock deal worth $60 billion, which is believed to be one of the largest deals in the history of venture capital-backed startups. Cursor, which is known as an AI coding assistant, has achieved huge success in a very short time. Cursor was founded by Aman Sangar and his colleagues. Through this deal, SpaceX is preparing to further strengthen its AI strategy.
Indian origin founder did wonders
Cursor, a Silicon Valley-based AI coding assistant, was founded by Aman Sangar, Michael Truel, Sualeh Asif and Arvid Lunnemark, all graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The company’s parent firm Anisphere had achieved a valuation of about $30 billion last year, after which its founder became a billionaire. Cursor currently achieves annual B2B revenues of $2.6 billion and is counted among the fastest growing AI software startups in the world. The company has so far received a total funding of $ 3.3 billion from institutions like Nvidia, Google, Accel, Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.
SpaceX will be strong in the race of AI coding tools
With this all-stock deal of $60 billion, SpaceX is expected to get a strong hold in the field of AI coding tools. Cursor is currently working with around 10 lakh daily users and 3.6 lakh paid subscribers. Its customers include big companies like British Airways, BP, Nokia and Sanofi. Cursor competes with Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot and OpenAI and Google’s AI-based products. The company bills itself as a model agnostic platform, where customers can choose from different AI systems. Through this acquisition, SpaceX can reach a position to challenge competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Big bet on AI future, India also becomes an important market
The cursor started in the year 2022. Initially the company was working on training model technology related to mechanical engineering, but later it shifted its focus to coding tools. Aman Sangar had earlier said that India is the company’s second or third largest market and the company is also increasing focus on Indian enterprise customers. Talks between SpaceX and Cursor had been going on for several months and in April SpaceX had received the option of acquisition or strategic partnership. The deal will give Cursor access to SpaceX’s massive computing infrastructure, which is expected to accelerate the development of its AI models. After the announcement of the acquisition, SpaceX shares also saw a rise and the shares jumped 14 percent to $ 222.33 in early trading.
