8th Pay Commission: When can employees get salary with arrears? Here’s the update

May 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The 8th Pay Commission is still in talks with shareholders regarding changes in salary, pension and allowances before finalizing its report. After getting approval, it can be implemented by the end of 2027 and arrears are expected to be received from January 1, 2026. Employee organizations have suggested different fitment factors. After the report is submitted, approved and implemented, central government employees will get increased salary along with arrears.

The 8th Central Pay Commission is not yet implemented as it is still under discussion with employee and pensioner organizations, people and other stakeholders on issues related to salaries, pensions, allowances and working conditions of employees. These talks are part of the process of preparing the report containing the recommendations of the 8th CPC.

After the report is ready, the 8th Pay Commission will send it to the Group of Ministers. After approval, the report will be implemented and employees will get revised salary along with arrears. It is expected that they will get the arrears from January 1, 2026. But the question is, when will the increased salary along with arrears be received? If there are 20 months of arrears remaining for Level 1-5 employees, how much amount can they get?

8th pay commission

The 8th Pay Commission has recently released the schedule of meetings with stakeholders in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The Commission has called central government institutions, unions and associations to discuss the demands related to the 8th CPC. Meetings have also been scheduled in Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh in June 2026.

Increase from 8th Pay Commission

Many employee and pensioner organizations have demanded different fitment factors to increase salary and pension in meetings with 8th Pay Commission officials. The main organization of central government employees (NC-JCM) has demanded 3.833 fitment factor and minimum basic pay of Rs 69,000. All India Defense Employees Federation (AIDEF) has also demanded a fitment factor of 3.83. Whereas Indian Railways Technical Supervisors Association (IRTSA) has demanded five different fitment factors, ranging from 2.92 for level 2-5 employees to 4.38 for level 17-18 employees.

However, all these suggestions are based on the estimates and demands of different employee and pensioner organizations. The 8th Pay Commission will consider these suggestions while deciding the fitment factor, but it can also decide its own separate multiplier. For example, in the 7th Pay Commission, NC-JCM had demanded a fitment factor of 3.71, but the Commission had recommended 2.57, which was later approved.
