8th Pay Commission: How much can the salary increase if the family unit increases from 3.0 to 5.0? Know the whole matter

June 26, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Fitment factor has become the most discussed topic among government employees regarding the 8th Pay Commission. However, now employee organizations and experts say that merely increasing the fitment factor will not meet the real needs of the employees. He believes that the family unit used to determine the minimum wage should also be reviewed, so that the current family responsibilities can be properly included.

The basis of 3.0 family units was in the 7th Pay Commission.

The 7th Pay Commission had made 3.0 family units the basis for determining the minimum wage. In this, the government employee was considered as 1.0 units, the spouse was considered as 0.8 units, the first child was considered as 0.6 units and the second child was considered as 0.6 units. In this way the total family unit was decided as 3.0.

However, dependent parents were not included in this calculation. In today’s time, a large number of government employees also take responsibility for the financial and medical needs of their parents.

Demand to increase family unit from 4.6 to 5.0

Employee organizations argue that considering the current social and economic conditions, the family unit should be increased from 3.0 to at least 4.6 to 5.0. He says that this will determine the minimum wage on a more realistic basis and the family needs of the employees can be better assessed.

This change is being considered necessary especially keeping in mind the dependent parents, rising inflation, health expenditure and increasing expenditure on education.

What will be its effect?

If the 8th Pay Commission recommends increasing the family unit, it can have a direct impact on the calculation of minimum wage. Apart from the fitment factor, this can also change the basis of determining the basic salary, which can benefit lakhs of central employees and pensioners.

However, till now no official announcement or recommendation has been made by the government or the 8th Pay Commission regarding increasing the family unit. At present, this is a demand raised by employee organizations and experts, which can be considered during the formation and recommendations of the commission.
