50 year record broken, hottest day of June ever recorded in Britain

June 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The severe heat has troubled not only India but people all over the world. In Britain, the record of the last 50 years has been broken. Wednesday was officially the hottest day of June ever recorded, breaking the record set in 1976. According to the Meteorological Department, a temperature of 35.7 degrees Celsius has been recorded in Charlwood, Surrey, breaking the 50-year-old record of 35.6 degrees Celsius. However, after some time, a temperature of 35.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Wiggonholt, West Sussex, which also broke this record. The surprising thing is that for the first time in the month of June, the temperature in Britain has reached close to 36 degrees Celsius.

However, Britain’s highest temperature so far is 40.3 degrees Celsius, which was recorded in July 2022. At the same time, if we talk about Britain’s scorching heat of the year 1976, people had put foil on the windows to protect themselves from the sun and due to less supply of water, they were forced to use the pipes installed on the roads.

Hottest day of the year recorded in Scotland

Scotland has recorded its hottest day this year and temperatures are expected to rise further by the end of this week. A maximum temperature of 29.4 degrees Celsius was recorded in Dyce, Aberdeen, while the mercury reached 29 degrees Celsius in Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire. Not only this, a temperature of 28.7 degrees Celsius has also been recorded in Aboyne in Aberdeenshire, Leuchars in Fife and Edinburgh.

In some areas of Scotland the temperature is expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius this week. Meteorologists say that the record for the hottest temperature in the month of June in Scotland (32.3 degrees Celsius), which was recorded on June 18, 1893 in Ochertyre, Perthshire, is likely to be broken.

Climate change program canceled

A climate change event in London on how to deal with extreme heat was canceled on Wednesday because the issue it was intended to discuss was climate change. The event was scheduled to be held at the London School of Economics during London Climate Action Week. Organizers said, ‘We regret that the event has had to be canceled due to the severe heat warning issued by the UK Met Office.

It is extremely hot in Paris too

After Britain, Paris, the capital of France, has also recorded a new record of heat in the month of June. The temperature in this city has reached 40.9 degrees Celsius, which has left behind the new British record of 35.7 degrees Celsius.
