The anniversary of Operation Blue Star is celebrated every year on 6 June. In 1984, Operation ‘Blue Star’ was conducted by the Indian Army to remove extremist elements from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. This time, on the occasion of its 42nd anniversary, pro-Khalistan slogans were raised in the premises of the Golden Temple, the most sacred religious place of the Sikhs. The protesters gathered in front of ‘Akal Takht’, the highest religious and secular center of the Sikhs. They also showed posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was said to be leading the Sikh extremists inside the campus in 1984.
June 6 is the death anniversary of Bhindranwale. He was the head of Damdami Taksal, a traditional educational organization and madrassa of the Sikhs. It was founded by the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. At the time of his death in 1984, he was the head of this organization. Before this occasion, Punjab Police had made elaborate security arrangements in Amritsar and surrounding areas to maintain security and law and order.

What is Operation Blue Star?
On June 6, 1984, the Indian Army entered the Golden Temple under Operation Blue Star. This action was taken on the orders of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to stop the Sikh insurgency going on under the leadership of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in Punjab. Bhindranwale had stored a large quantity of weapons in the Golden Temple complex. He and his armed supporters were killed during this operation. This action was widely criticized. A few months later, on 31 October 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated at her residence in New Delhi by two of her own Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh.
