Uttar Pradesh has received a big gift in the direction of better road connectivity and industrial development. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the construction of 117.5 km long Kanpur-Kabarai Access Controlled Greenfield Highway under the PM Gatishakti National Master Plan. Its estimated cost has been kept at Rs 7,145.14 crore.
Kanpur-Kabarai Greenfield Highway will be developed into 4 lanes. But there is a plan to expand it to 6 lanes in future. It will be built by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) under the ‘Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) (Toll)’ mode. After its completion, the distance between Kanpur and Kabrai will reduce from 3.5 hours to just 1.5 hours.

Will cover 4 districts and so many assemblies of UP
According to the map and DPR of this project released by PIB, this greenfield highway will cover Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur and Mahoba. It will pass through Ghatampur, Maharajpur of Kanpur city, Bhoganipur of Kanpur Dehat, Sikandra, Hamirpur Sadar of Hamirpur, Mahoba Sadar of Rath Mahoba, Charkhari. A population of approximately 1 crore will benefit directly or indirectly. Employment will also be available in the areas falling under the influence of the highway. This project can prove to be a game changer for the economy of UP, Bundelkhand region and Madhya Pradesh.
1139 hectares of land from 93 villages will be taken
According to the DPR of the project, land will be acquired from a total of 93 villages for this greenfield highway. 1139 hectares of land will be acquired from farmers of 49 villages of Kanpur city and countryside, 35 of Hamirpur and 9 villages of Mahoba. The tender process will be finalized along with the land acquisition in three months. Soon, along with evaluation of the land, the budget for distribution of compensation will be made available to the district administration.
Economic development will be strengthened due to better connectivity
Through this greenfield, there will be fast and easy connectivity between the highway from Kanpur, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Kabrai to Jhansi, Jalaun of Bundelkhand and Sagar, Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh. It will also provide strategic connectivity with NH-34, NH-35, Bundelkhand Expressway, Kanpur Ring Road and state highways SH-46, SH-91, SH-10B and SH-42. This highway will strengthen regional economic development.
Kanpur-Kabarai Greenfield Highway will benefit Bundelkhand in this way
The areas of Jhansi, Jalaun, Mahoba and Hamirpur are famous for granite, gravel and other minerals. In such a situation, transportation of these minerals in UP through Kanpur-Kabarai will be faster and cheaper. The supply chain of construction materials will become stronger in UP. This will greatly benefit the construction material traders of Bundelkhand. Also, Bundelkhand will be directly connected to the industrial areas of Kanpur like Panki, Rania, Jainpur, Unnao and Trans Ganga Industrial Hub.
With the construction of this greenfield highway, farmers of Bundelkhand will get an opportunity to easily transport their products to Kanpur and other big markets of UP. Also, due to better connectivity, the transportation cost of farmers will reduce. This can increase the income of farmers.
Madhya Pradesh will also get full benefits
This highway will later become an important part of the Bhopal-Kanpur economic corridor. This will accelerate trade and industrial activities between Uttar Pradesh and Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. Better route will be available to goods vehicles coming to and from Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Sagar and Bundelkhand region. This will reduce the cost of transport and will also save time.
With the construction of this highway, the automobile, engineering, pharma and manufacturing sectors of Bhopal will be available to UP. This will increase business activities. Logistics parks, warehouses and transport hubs will start being built rapidly in Bhopal and its surrounding districts.
Beneficial for Uttar Pradesh also
The cities of Uttar Pradesh will also benefit greatly from the construction of Kanpur-Kabarai Greenfield Highway. Construction and mineral materials of Bundelkhand areas will be available at a faster rate and due to reduction in cost. Products related to automobile, engineering, pharma and manufacturing sectors of Bhopal will be available easily and quickly at lower prices than before.
What is the BOT mode, under which this highway will be built?
Kanpur-Kabarai Highway will be built under Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) mode. This is a public private partnership i.e. PPP model. In this, the government gives a private company the right to build and operate a big project like a road, bridge or airport. During this period, the private company, after earning its profit through toll from the public, hands over the project back to the government.
