A shocking revelation has come to light regarding the justice system of the country. Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman and senior lawyer Manan Kumar Mishra has said that about 35 to 40 percent of the lawyers have fake degrees and they are practicing in the courts on the basis of these fake degree certificates. He said that BCI is aware of this issue and is taking steps in this regard.
BCI Chairman Manan Mishra said that the Bar Council of India (BCI) is aware that about 35 to 40 percent of the lawyers seen wearing black coats and bands in court premises are lawyers. Their degrees are completely fake, such people have either got the degrees made from somewhere or have purchased them and on this basis they are practicing law in the courts. He said that many people are appearing in courts wearing black coats and bands on the basis of fake degrees.
40% lawyers suspected to be fake
He said that when BCI started the process of verification of lawyers’ degrees, about 40% of the lawyers did not fill the verification forms. He said that in such a situation, there is a suspicion that 40% of these lawyers are fake. He further said that he has brought this fact to the notice of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. He said that the judiciary and the Bar Council together are trying to deal with this problem.
Clarification given regarding cockroach comment
This statement has come amid the recent Cockroach Janata Party controversy on social media. In fact, during the hearing of a case last week, Chief Justice Surya Kant had raised questions on the authenticity of the degrees of some lawyers. He had said that many unemployed youth are attacking the system under the guise of activism. Later the CJI clarified that he was referring to those who practice law with fake degrees.
Manan Kumar Mishra also said that the Chief Justice’s comment was only for those people who are appearing in the courts with the help of fake degrees. He said that the Chief Justice meant those who obtain fake degrees, wear black coats, bands and gowns and appear in court. He said that that statement was about him only. The background of that situation was different.
What did Chief Justice Surya Kant say
In fact, last week, while reprimanding a lawyer who had filed a petition related to senior advocate designations, Chief Justice Surya Kant had expressed doubts over the authenticity of the legal degrees of many advocates. Expressing no expectation of action from the Bar Council of India, the Chief Justice had said that he was considering getting the degrees verified by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Chief Justice further said that some unemployed youth are like “cockroaches” who attack every system under the guise of activism. However, the Chief Justice later clarified that he meant people with fake degrees.
