
The National Investigation Agency has filed a charge sheet in the special court against a total of 31 accused in four different cases in connection with the road jam before the assembly elections in Malda district of West Bengal, obstruction of government work and alleged detention of judicial officers. According to the statement issued by the NIA, these four cases are related to the incidents that took place during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign of the voter list in Malda district.
During the investigation, it came to light that roads were blocked in an organized manner at many places, movement of government officials was stopped and attempts were made to stop judicial officers associated with the election process from their work. The NIA, in its charge sheet filed in the special court in Kolkata, has alleged that all the accused had become part of the illegal gathering as part of a well-planned conspiracy.
What did NIA say in the charge sheet?
NIA said that these people blocked public roads, obstructed the work of government officials and wrongfully stopped the judicial officers deployed for voter list revision and interfered in their duty. The agency says that during the investigation, digital and technical evidence, documentary evidence and statements of eyewitnesses were collected. On the basis of this evidence the role of the accused has been decided. The alleged role of each accused has been mentioned in the charge sheet.
According to the NIA, charges have been filed against the accused under several sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) 2023, National Highway Act 1956 and West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act 1972. It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court had taken cognizance of this entire matter on its own. After this, on the orders of the Supreme Court, the responsibility of investigation was handed over to NIA. During investigation, the agency found that the activities of the accused not only affected the electoral process but also worsened the law and order situation and affected normal life.
Investigation is still going on
NIA says that the investigation is still going on. The agency is working towards identifying other absconding accused and suspects involved in the conspiracy, arresting them and taking legal action against them. The agency believes that these incidents affected constitutional and legislative processes and disrupted public order. Now all eyes are on the court proceedings in this case, where there will be a judicial inquiry into the evidence and allegations presented by the NIA.
What is Malda violence case?
On April 1, 2026, there was a big controversy in Mothabadi area of Kaliachak block of Malda district regarding deletion of names in the voter list under the SIR process of the Election Commission. On which the local people protested considering it as ‘selective deletion’. A crowd of hundreds of people surrounded the BDO office. 7 judicial officers posted on duty there were held hostage for 8-9 hours. According to reports, the mob pelted stones, damaged vehicles and also blocked NH-12 (Kolkata-Siliguri road).
