29 councilors are from BJP and mayor is from AAP! What happened in Abohar that there was an uproar?

July 10, 2026 by Uma Shankar

BJP, which won the civic elections with the maximum number of councilors, has not been able to become mayor of Abohar Municipal Corporation of Punjab. With a major upset, Aam Aadmi Party succeeded in making its mayor. After this BJP created a huge ruckus. Former BJP Punjab President and senior leader Sunil Jakhar was seen arguing with the officials. As soon as Aam Aadmi Party was declared mayor, there was anger among BJP MLAs and councilors.

In fact, when the mayor’s elections in Abohar Municipal Corporation started at around 4 o’clock, the entire Municipal Corporation was transformed into a police cantonment. After about an hour, the atmosphere in the Municipal Corporation became completely tense when in the presence of all the winning councilors and administration in the Town Hall of the Corporation, Aam Aadmi Party councilor Ganesh Sablaniya was declared the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation by Aam Aadmi Assembly Incharge Arun Narang.

Officers’ vehicles surrounded in Municipal Corporation itself

This spread anger among BJP councilors. They surrounded the vehicles of the officers in the Municipal Corporation itself. MLA Sandeep Jakhar, nephew of Sunil Jakhar, who was expelled from Congress and joined BJP, and other councilors surrounded the DC’s car and lay down in front of the car. The driver of DC’s car tried to forcefully pull out the car. Two BJP councilors have also been injured due to this.

Police lathicharge to remove councilors

The police resorted to mild lathicharge to remove the councilors who were stopping the DC’s vehicle. On receiving the information, former Punjab state president of BJP Sunil Jakhar also reached the spot and accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of dictatorship. BJP councilors surrounded DC and Firozpur Commissioner in the Municipal Corporation itself.

Sunil Jakhar’s question to officials

Till evening, Sunil Jakhar sat in the Municipal Corporation office with DC and Firozpur Commissioner and kept demanding answers from them. He asked that when BJP had 29 councilors and Aam Aadmi Party had only 20 councilors, then how did he become mayor? He told the officials that this will not be tolerated at all.
