23 opposition parties have expressed concern by writing letters to CJI Surya Kant and other judges of the Supreme Court regarding the electoral process in the country. These parties have raised questions on the SIR process and claimed that the results of the recent elections do not reflect the ‘will of the people’. The letter alleges that agencies like ED, CBI and NIA are used to ‘target’ the opposition and topple elected governments. Apart from toppling elected governments, these agencies are also used for the purpose of manipulating the results of elections.”
The letter also demands that wherever appropriate, reintroduction of the paper ballot voting system should be considered. this letter CJI All the judges of the Supreme Court have been sent through Surya Kant.
Opposition parties wrote letter to CJI
It has been signed by “like-minded” parties “opposing BJP”, such as Indian National Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Samajwadi Party, RJD, Trinamool Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar), Aam Aadmi Party, JMM, Communist parties (CPI-M, CPI, CPI-ML), IUML, JKNC, PDP Forward Bloc, etc.
The letter claims that appointments in the Election Commission have been under a lot of suspicion since the BJP came to power in 2014 and the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) done just before the elections in states like Bihar, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu was unnecessary. He says that manipulation was done in the recent elections in Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra.
Regarding the Election Commission and the appointments made in it, the letter said that people associated with BJP keep taking appointments, who work for the government.
Questions raised on SIR
Regarding the SIR exercise in Bihar, the letter said the Election Commission’s rationale behind the exercise was “sanitization” of the voter roll, as Bangladeshi infiltrators were claimed to be part of the voter roll.
However, there is no data to show that such infiltration from Bangladesh actually took place; Nor has the Election Commission put any data in the public domain to show that Bangladeshi infiltrators have illegally acquired the right to vote in India.
The letter also appeals that when everything fails, people trust the judiciary. Then if the judiciary fails to respond, it is a sign of the complete breakdown of the Republic.
Demand for ban on SIR before 2027 elections
Opposition parties have expressed hope that the SIR exercise to be held in other states (before the elections to be held in 2027) will be stopped. He says this should be done when elections to state assemblies are at least 5 years away, so that voters can be physically verified by ECI representatives, rather than through a documentation process (enumeration forms, etc.), which even the Bihar SIR exercise was not aware of.
