178 countries of the world dwarf America’s defense budget, expenditure will be 3 times more than Pakistan’s GDP

July 23, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The US House of Representatives has recently passed a record Defense Bill of $ 1.15 trillion (about Rs 111 lakh crore). This amount is so huge that even the total economy (GDP) of about 178 countries of the world appears small in front of it. The US defense budget alone is more than three times the entire GDP of our neighbor Pakistan. Let us try to understand it in full detail…

America’s record defense budget

Recently, the US Parliament has approved a huge military budget of $ 1.15 trillion for the financial year. In this, not only arrangements have been made for the modern weapons, research and salaries of the soldiers of the US Army, but additional billions of dollars have been reserved for the preparations for the increasing tension with Iran and possible war in the Middle East. As soon as this huge budget is passed, there is a data race between global economy and military experts.

Unique mathematics of statistics: How did 178 countries lag behind?

There are about 195 recognized countries in the world. If we compare the GDP figures of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the GDP of only 17 countries is more than 1.15 trillion dollars. This includes big economic superpower countries like America, China, Germany, Japan, India, Britain, France and Italy. What this means is that America spends more money on its army and defense than what 178 countries of the world produce and earn in a year.

Budget 3 times bigger than Pakistan’s GDP

If we compare this with India’s neighbors and regional economies, the figures are even more shocking.

Standard/Area figure (estimated) Comparison with the US defense budget
US defense budget 1.15 trillion dollars (about Rs 111 lakh crore) —
Pakistan’s total GDP 350-370 billion dollars The US defense budget is 3.2 times Pakistan’s GDP.
total GDP of Bangladesh 450 – 480 billion dollars US defense budget is 2.5 times Bangladesh’s GDP
Share in total global military expenditure About 3.4 trillion dollars (global) America alone accounts for about 40 percent of the world’s total military expenditure.

Understand in simple words, America spends three times more money on its Army, Air Force, Navy and new weapons than Pakistan earns in a year by combining its agriculture, industry, IT and service sectors.

After all, where will this much money be spent?

  1. Iran and Middle East Security: Emergency funds for escalating conflicts in the Middle East, security of Red Sea sea lanes, and possible military conflict with Iran.
  2. Eye on Indo-Pacific and China: Modernization of navy and long-range missiles to counter Chinese influence in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea.
  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Hypersonic Weapons: Big investment in AI drones, cyber warfare and hypersonic missile technology for next generation warfare.
  4. Modernization of Nuclear Weapons: Upgrading America’s nuclear triad (submarines, bombers and intercontinental missiles).

Global politics and impact on India?

  1. Military Balance: The increasing military race between America and China will make global security equations more complex in the future.
  2. Supply Chain and Energy Markets: The increase in US military spending and activities in the Middle East may have a direct impact on crude oil prices and maritime trade routes.
  3. India-US defense relations: America’s strong defense-industrial base can prove important for India in terms of technical cooperation and maintaining strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific region.

Why is it important for America?

America’s defense budget of $1.15 trillion is not just a financial figure, but it is proof that the world’s most powerful country is ready to spend to any extent to maintain its military supremacy. While many countries are struggling with economic crises, such a huge defense budget of a single country highlights the gap in the global defense scenario. On the other hand, the way geopolitics is being seen, the American President is in no mood to dilute the country’s security and military strength. Also, no agreement has been reached with Iran yet. In such a situation, there is no information as to when this war with Iran will end.
