When the coffin of former Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei was placed before being laid to rest in the Grand Mosallah of Tehran, the world’s eyes were fixed not only on him but also on the four other coffins kept next to him. These included a small coffin of a 14-month-old girl. This is the reason why this state funeral of Iran has become more and more discussed. According to Iranian state media and international reports, the four people whose coffins were kept with Khamenei were close members of his family and died in the same attack in which Khamenei was killed.
The first name among these is that of Bashara al-Khamenei, who was the elder daughter of Ali Khamenei. She stayed away from public life, but her family role was considered important in Iran’s ruling establishment. He was married to Misbah Al-Hoda Bagheri, who belonged to an influential religious and political family. Bagheri was also killed in the same attack and his coffin was also kept near Khamenei.
The third coffin is that of Zahra Haddad Adel. She was the wife of Mojtaba Khamenei and the daughter of former Iranian Parliament Speaker and influential leader Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel. The Haddad Adel family is counted among the most influential families in Iran’s politics, education and cultural institutions. His presence is also being considered an indication of how big a role family relationships have played in Iran’s power structure. The coffin that attracted the most attention was that of 14-month-old Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani. She was the granddaughter of Ali Khamenei and her age is said to be only 14 months.
