
Satyabrata Kumar, former Special Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), who investigated several high-profile money laundering cases including Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya and Mahadev online betting app, has taken VRS (voluntary retirement). He served in ED for about 12 years. According to sources, he decided to leave government service due to personal reasons.
According to the information, in April the Central Government had given approval to take Voluntary Retirement VRS. Formal orders in this regard were issued earlier this month. The 2004 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Customs and Indirect Taxes cadre was posted as Commissioner (Appeals) in Siliguri, West Bengal, after returning from the ED exactly a year ago.
Kumar’s retirement year was 2037
According to officials, 48-year-old Satyabrata Kumar was approved by the central government to take VRS in April and formal orders in this regard were issued earlier this month. Kumar’s retirement year was 2037, but due to personal reasons he decided to take VRS 11 years in advance.
Led several high-profile investigations
Kumar led several high-profile investigations conducted by the ED’s Mumbai-based Western Regional Office. These included the alleged two billion US dollar bank fraud case against diamond traders Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, bank loan fraud case involving liquor baron Vijay Mallya and several sensitive cases involving several leaders of Maharashtra.
Important role in confiscating assets
In the PNB fraud case, Satyabrata Kumar played an important role in confiscating foreign assets worth crores of rupees, which were considered to be proceeds of crime. The Western Regional Office of ED, under the leadership of Kumar, also investigated the Mahadev betting app case, in which links with many leaders and businessmen of Chhattisgarh were revealed.
Kapil Raj had resigned last year
This is the second time in less than a year that an officer has resigned from government service soon after leaving the ED. Earlier in July 2025, Kapil Raj had resigned from service 15 years before his scheduled retirement. Kapil, a 2009 batch IRS officer, had served in the ED for eight years. He resigned from service on being appointed as Additional Commissioner in the GST Intelligence Department in Delhi.
