After the implementation of the Waqf Amendment Act, the process of preparing digital records of Waqf properties has accelerated across the country. For this, UMEED i.e. Unified Waqf Management Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Portal has also been started by the Central Government. Online registration of Waqf properties across the country is being done on this portal. By doing this, records of the correct number, status and ownership of Waqf properties will be prepared.
On July 27, 2026, in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that till July 21, 2026, records of more than 7.99 lakh Waqf properties across the country were registered on the UMEED portal. During this, he also informed the Parliament about illegal occupation of 574 properties of Shia and Sunni Waqf Board in Bihar.
What is UMEED Portal?
UMEED Portal is an online platform designed for digitization and management of Waqf properties. In this, an integrated digital database of all Waqf properties is being prepared. This will reveal how many Waqf properties are there in which state and how updated their records are. How many properties are under dispute or encroachment?
How is the data of Waqf properties uploaded?
- First of all, the maker goes to the UMEED portal and enters the details of the property.
- Then the checker checks the details and documents of those properties.
- If everything is correct, the approver gives final approval.
- After this the record is considered accepted on the portal.
Maker i.e. the person filling the data on the UMEED portal, who enters the details of the properties here. At the same time, the checker means the employee who checks the properties. At the same time, the approver means the officer who gives final approval to the actual condition of the property.
How many Waqf properties have been registered on UMEED portal so far?
According to the government, till July 21, 2026, a total of 7,99,027 Waqf properties were entered on the UMEED portal. Of these, 6,17,192 properties have been approved at the final level. At the same time, 1,81,835 properties are still pending at the recordmaker, checker and approver level.

Why was the deadline for uploading records of Waqf properties on UMEED portal extended?
After the implementation of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, all state Waqf boards had to upload the records of all their Waqf properties on the UMEED portal within 6 months. But many states could not complete this work within the stipulated time. There were reasons behind this like incomplete records, old documents, land related disputes, shortage of staff or technical problems. After this, the concerned Waqf Tribunal or High Court extended the time limit if sufficient reasons were found.
According to Section 32 of the UMEED Act, 1995, it is the responsibility of the state to monitor and manage all the Waqf properties of a state. If Waqf properties are encroached upon, the State Waqf Board takes action to remove them under Section 54.
What is the status of Waqf properties in Bihar?
There are two Waqf boards in Bihar. Shia and Sunni. According to the data given by the government, details of a total of 6,312 properties of Shia Waqf Board were uploaded on the UMEED portal. Out of these, 5,955 properties have received approval. At the same time, a total of 11,454 properties of Bihar Sunni Waqf Board were registered on the UMEED portal. Of these, 6,700 got approval.
The government also told in Parliament that 63 properties of Bihar Shia Waqf Board and 511 properties of Sunni Waqf Board are under illegal occupation. That means a total of 574 Waqf properties in Bihar are under illegal occupation. Both Waqf Boards of Bihar have started action to remove encroachment under Section 54.

Will get relief from these charges on Waqf properties
For many years, there have been allegations regarding irregularities in records, double claims, encroachment and lack of transparency regarding Waqf properties. Now, after the digital records of these properties are uploaded on the UMEED portal, it may become easier to settle the disputes related to it. Also, no one can easily take possession of these properties illegally. Having digital records of these properties will also boost their transparency.
