35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower
The world’s highest railway bridge spans the Chenab River at a height of 359 meters (1,178 ft), and is 35 meters higher than the world-famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.
This arch bridge, built between Bakkal and Kauri in Reasi district of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is situated at a height of 1,178 feet above the river bed and serves as an important link from Katra to Banihal. A dream project costing around Rs 35000 crore is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link.
This ambitious project was approved in 2003, but it took some time to complete due to stability and security concerns. In the year 2008, the contract to build this bridge was given. This bridge is capable of withstanding strong winds, earthquakes, extreme cold and floods. This bridge is capable of withstanding wind speed of 260 km per hour.
