UP Elections 2027: SP needs alliance more… Big statement by Congress leader Imran Masood

July 13, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the rift in the relations between Congress and Samajwadi Party is clearly visible. The war of words between the leaders of both the parties has intensified, after which questions are being raised on the India alliance. Meanwhile, the statement of Congress leader Imran Masood has come to light. Targeting SP in sharp words, he said that SP needs alliance more than Congress. Along with this he also said that SP cannot tolerate a Muslim leader.

This statement of Congress leader Masood has come at a time when both the parties are facing each other in public forums regarding their respective strengths and the terms of alliance after the success in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Due to this, the question is once again arising whether this partnership which will lead to victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be able to continue till the next assembly elections.

‘SP needs alliance more than Congress’

Responding to Udayveer Singh’s comment, Masood claimed that Samajwadi Party needs alliance more than Congress. He said, ‘Samajwadi Party is demanding an alliance, and because of this alliance you could win 37 seats in 2024 otherwise you could not even cross 120 seats in 2022’.

‘SP cannot tolerate Muslim leader’

Launching a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party, Masood alleged that the party has consistently failed to support influential Muslim leaders. He said that Samajwadi Party cannot tolerate any Muslim leader or a leader who is outspoken and one such leader is now in Congress. Referring to some prominent Muslim leaders associated with SP, he said that everyone knows what happened to leaders like Mukhtar Ansari, Atiq Ahmed and Azam Khan in the party. He alleged that SP does not support its influential Muslim leaders.

‘I won because of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’

The Congress leader also rejected the suggestion that his election victory depended on the alliance with the Samajwadi Party. He said, ‘I have won my seat because of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Despite being in the alliance, I did not hold a single rally for the Samajwadi Party during the elections.

Masood’s statement clearly shows the growing tension between Congress and SP. Earlier, newly appointed UP Congress President Araj Kumar Singh Patel had said that Congress will demand equal seats in any alliance with SP for the assembly elections. His statement was seen as clear that Congress, encouraged by its better performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is no longer ready to remain at the second position in the state.
