T20 Mumbai: First lost captaincy, then the match… Suryakumar Yadav got double blow from Shreyas Iyer in a single day

June 7, 2026 by Uma Shankar

June 6 was not a good day for captain Suryakumar Yadav, who led the Indian team to the T20 World Cup 2026 title about 3 months ago. While the captain of any team that wins the ICC title gets a reward, he commands the team for a long time, whereas the captaincy of the Indian team was snatched away from Suryakumar Yadav. In his place, this responsibility was given to star batsman Shreyas Iyer. After such a big shock, when Suryakumar came on the field in the evening, he left the disappointment behind and played a strong innings, but here too Iyer snatched the match from his team.

On Saturday, June 6, a change in the captaincy of the Indian T20 team was announced. A few hours later, the teams of Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer were face to face in the T20 Mumbai League. In this match, Suryakumar Yadav was captaining Triumphs Knights MNE, while Shreyas Sobo was leading Mumbai Falcons. Both the players had failed in the last two consecutive matches of the tournament but this time both of them were successful.

First it was the turn of Suryakumar Yadav, who was struggling to score runs not only in this league but before that in IPL and in international cricket for the last one and a half years, due to which he had to lose the captaincy of India and his place in the team. Coincidentally, on the day of selection, Surya’s bat came and he scored a quick 48 runs in just 24 balls. However, this was still not enough to take his team to a big score and Triumphs could score only 147 runs.
