
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off western Cuba on Monday, shaking buildings in and around Havana. At present there is no news of any injury or damage. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in the sea just west of the capital. Earlier, strong earthquake tremors were felt in Bhutan on Sunday evening and Philippines on Monday morning.
Pinar del Rio Hotel manager Flavia Pupo told how the building shook and people spread fear. He said on the phone, everyone is fine here. The people on the road are a little scared. The tremors of this earthquake were felt till Florida. The National Weather Service in Miami tweeted that they had received several reports of tremors in the southwestern part of the state.
7.7 magnitude earthquake
The Oriente Fault Zone is located off the southeast coast of Cuba and has experienced dangerous earthquakes in recent centuries. These include a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the open sea in January 2020, which caused damage in Cuba and the Cayman Islands.
Earth moved to Florida
The impact of the earthquake was not limited to Cuba only. Many reports of tremors have also come from the south-western parts of the US state of Florida. Miami-based National Weather Service (NWS) said that it has received information from citizens that they felt tremors.
