June 20, 2026 by Uma Shankar

In Bangladesh, June 23 is the foundation day of Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League. Before this the security agencies had become alert. Intelligence reports say that party leaders and workers may try to organize programs in many districts and cities of the country on this occasion. In view of this apprehension, the police have increased security across the country.

In a special letter issued by the Police Headquarters, it has been said that Awami League workers can hoist the flag at party offices, take out processions with banners and organize public programs. Police fear that during these programs there may be clashes with other political parties, especially the National Citizens Party (NCP) and anti-discrimination student organizations.

All police units on alert

Police Headquarters DIG Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan has instructed all police units to remain alert. It has been said in the letter that if the police tries to stop the activities of Awami League, the workers may protest and tension may increase. Therefore, necessary security arrangements have already been made.

In view of the seriousness of this matter, all the Metropolitan Police Commissioners, Range DIG and the Operation Department of the Police Headquarters have been ordered to keep special vigil. Security agencies believe that the law and order situation may deteriorate around Foundation Day.

Incidents of violence during the procession

In recent times, incidents of sudden processions and distribution of pamphlets in the name of Awami League have come to light at many places. On Thursday, a cocktail bomb was thrown during a procession of Awami League in Mohakhali area of Dhaka. Three people were detained after this incident. On the same day, Awami League’s sister organization Jubo League also took out a procession in front of Gana Bhavan. Police say that the situation is being constantly monitored to ensure that public safety is not affected by the activities of any banned political organization.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner S.N. Nazrul Islam said that the police is on full alert in view of the events to be held on June 23. Check posts are being set up in many areas of the city and additional security forces have been deployed to prevent any violence, vandalism or unrest.
