Sawan Shivling Worship: In Sanatan Dharma, although the God of Gods, Mahadev is worshiped 12 months a year, but devotion to Bholenath has special significance in the month of Sawan. Sawan is the fifth month of the Hindi calendar, which is especially dedicated to the devotion of Lord Shiva. Sawan is very dear to Lord Bholenath. It is believed that by doing devotion in this month, Bholenath becomes happy soon. According to Drik Panchang, this year Saavan will start from 30th July and continue till the full moon of Saavan month on 28th August.
The worship of Shivalinga in the month of Sawan is very special. In this month, Jalabhishek and Rudrabhishek of Shivalinga are performed. Whereas the worship of Parthiv, i.e. made of earth, i.e. Shivling made of clay, is considered most auspicious in Saavan. The special importance of worshiping the earthly Shivalinga is described in Shiva Purana. It is believed that worshiping the earthly Shivalinga brings positive energy in life. Also the fear of untimely death ends.
Religious significance of worship of mortal Shivalinga
At the time of worship of Parthiv Shivling, Shivling is made from clay. To make this Shivalinga, soil is brought from the banks of a holy river. Then a Shivalinga is made from that soil and worshiped with rituals. The earthly form of Lord Shiva is dedicated to the complete devotion of the devotee towards God. It is believed that whoever worships the earthly Shivalinga with full devotion in Sawan receives the special blessings of Mahadev.
Many stories related to the earthly Shivalinga are found in religious texts. It is believed that the Shivlinga which Lord Shri Ram worshiped before conquering Lanka was made of clay only. Lord Shri Ram himself had created that earthly Shivalinga.
Rules and precautions for worship of Parthiva Shivlinga
To make the mortal Shivalinga, use only pure soil from the holy place. Make a mortal Shivalinga by mixing Ganga water, cow’s milk, cow dung, jaggery and ash in the soil. Take special care that the size of Shivling should normally be equal to the thumb. After puja and aarti, immerse the dead Shivalinga in water on the same day.
