Shipping lines throughout the Middle East have been badly affected due to Iran tensions and the US blockade. Due to which many countries of the world, from UAE to Iran, are looking for new ways for sea transport. Saudi Arabia’s Ports Authority (Mawani) has launched a new shipping service run by Emirates Shipping Line at Jeddah Islamic Port. This service will connect the country’s largest Red Sea port with India and Djibouti, so that trade connectivity and logistics services can be improved.
Mawani said that this new service will connect Jeddah Islamic Port with Mundra Port of India and Port of Djibouti. Also, this route has the capacity to carry goods up to 2144 ‘Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units’ (TEUs). The authority said that the new service will increase the capacity of the supply chain and ease trade through the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest sea routes.
Saudi Arabia’s improving position in global logistics
This step is part of Mawani’s strategy which aims to improve Saudi Arabia’s position in global logistics and transport performance indicators as well as boost the country’s exports. The initiative is also in line with the goals of Saudi Arabia’s ‘National Transport and Logistics Strategy’, which aims to establish the country as a global logistics hub connecting Asia, Africa and Europe.
India will benefit
This new shipping service can prove important for India. Recently, after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, both India’s imports and exports have been affected. Mawani said that this new service will connect Jeddah Islamic Port with Mundra Port of India and Port of Djibouti. After which one can get relief from the blockage caused by stress.
