After the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran, concerns about the security of Russian President Vladimir Putin have increased. For this reason, on June 8, Russia’s security agency FSB temporarily closed parts of the special camera network monitoring Putin and his closest officials. Russia feared that with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and modern cyber technologies, enemy countries or hackers could gain information about Putin’s activities through these cameras.
About 3 lakh general surveillance cameras installed in Moscow city are operational, but the special camera system related to Putin’s security has been closed for investigation. Now AI technology has become so modern that it can rapidly scan millions of hours of video footage. By simply asking questions in simple language, information about a person’s movements, meetings and security arrangements can be obtained.
Attempt to hide security pattern
According to the Financial Times report, Russian officials feared that if an enemy infiltrated this system, he could find out the daily routine and security patterns of Putin and other top officials. For this reason Putin ordered a complete security audit of the camera network. During the investigation, the network, password system and other technical parts were reviewed. Later some sections were reopened with more stringent security.
Why is there fear related to AI in security?
The report also mentions a major cyber espionage incident of November 2025. According to AI company Anthropic, a cyber group associated with China had targeted about 30 institutions. These included technology, finance, chemical industry and government institutions. In this attack, AI based software did 80 to 90% of the work automatically. From this it became clear that AI has now become a powerful weapon for cyber espionage and hacking.
Experts say that modern AI technology does not allow cameras to remain just recording devices, but turns them into a big data source. The activities of people, vehicles, buildings and important locations can be analyzed through video. This is why governments around the world have now become more cautious about the security of their surveillance systems.
