
The increase in orthopedic cases reflects broader changes in public health. Especially in the aging population, problems like wear and tear of joints, constant pain and difficulty in walking are becoming more common. Orthopedic treatments often require expensive implants, lengthy treatment and rehabilitation, which have traditionally placed a heavy financial burden on families. This situation proved to be extremely challenging personally for 43-year-old Gulshan Taneja, a resident of Kheda Gajju near Rajpura.

Taneja’s cashless treatment for ₹86,750
Gulshan Taneja was admitted to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala on 6 May and was treated for ligament tear the next day. Doctors recorded symptoms such as severe joint pain, swelling, instability and difficulty bearing weight. Under the Chief Minister Health Scheme, he was provided treatment worth ₹ 86,750 completely cashless. On May 12, he was discharged from the hospital and returned home, without the worry of huge medical bills that could add to the burden of his illness.
Gulshan Taneja said- I am slowly recovering now. Thanks to the health card, I did not have to pay any money for my treatment. This scheme is reducing the out-of-pocket expenses of families like ours and making expensive treatment accessible.
Treatment of knee, hip and trauma in cashless scheme.
Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh said, the burden of orthopedic diseases is increasing rapidly, which has highlighted the need to further strengthen accessible and affordable surgical care in Punjab.” He further said that under Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana, the government is providing cashless knee, hip and trauma treatment to thousands of patients, which is reducing the financial burden and improving mobility, recovery and quality of life of the patients.
Up to ₹84 crore spent on orthopedic treatments
He said that the expenditure of over ₹ 84 crore in just four months not only reflects the increasing health utilization, but also marks a major change in the state towards restoring mobility, reducing disability and improving the quality of life of patients. Demand for bone and joint related treatment increased in Punjab, more than ₹ 84 crore was spent on orthopedic treatments under Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana.
There is a continuous increase in health problems related to bones, joints and accidents in Punjab. According to the data of Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana, orthopedic treatments have emerged as an important part of the public health services of the state. Data from the state health agency shows that so far more than ₹84 crore has been spent on bone, joint and trauma related treatments under the scheme.
