Chinese President Xi Jinping was given a grand welcome in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. This is his first visit to North Korea in the last seven years. Xi Jinping, who arrived on a two-day official visit, was welcomed by North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol-ju. After a warm welcome at Pyongyang’s Sunan International Airport, Xi Jinping was given a 21-gun salute at Kim Il-sung Square.
Along with this, he was also given a guard of honor by the North Korean Army. Thousands of people were seen standing on the streets of the city carrying flags, flowers and balloons of China and North Korea to welcome the two leaders.
Pictures of this meeting have come to light at a time when relations between America and North Korea have remained tense for a long time. North Korea has been presenting itself as a nuclear powered country and has often openly challenged America. At the same time, the increasing closeness between China and North Korea has become a topic of discussion at the international level.
Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, said on Monday that the relationship between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) stands at a new historical starting point.

What is the diplomatic importance of this visit?
According to experts, there are many important messages hidden behind this journey. Relations between North Korea and Russia have strengthened rapidly since the Ukraine war. Defense cooperation between Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin has increased, which is also said to include the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia.
In such a situation, it is believed that Xi Jinping wants to strengthen China’s traditional economic and diplomatic influence on North Korea through this visit. Beijing wants to ensure that its strategic relations with Pyongyang remain as strong as before.
The tour is also related to the 1961 treaty
There is also a historical aspect to this journey. This visit is taking place on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the ‘Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance’ signed between China and North Korea in 1961. This treaty is considered to be China’s only formal defense treaty with any country.
In such a situation, this meeting between Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un is not just being considered a formal visit, but an important step towards strengthening the old strategic and political relations between the two countries.
