June 5, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Pakistan is once again carrying out its own activities in Pok. Pakistan has organized ‘general elections’ on June 7 in Gilgit-Baltistan of occupied Kashmir. On which India lodged a strong protest with Pakistan on Friday. Pakistan is going to hold elections in Gilgit-Baltistan of PoK on June 7 after six years, so that 33 members can be elected to the assembly there.

India has repeatedly expressed objection to Pakistan’s administrative, political and constitutional steps in Gilgit-Baltistan. India says that such steps have no legal basis and do not change India’s claim on this area.

What did India say in protest?

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a press statement, “The Government of India has lodged a strong protest with Pakistan regarding the plan of ‘general elections’ to be held on June 7 for the so-called ‘Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly’ in Indian areas illegally and forcefully occupied by Pakistan.”

The government reiterated that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan, are an integral and inalienable part of India.

Pakistan should vacate the occupied areas

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly criticized Pakistan’s efforts to bring about changes in areas like Gilgit-Baltistan, which India considers illegally occupied. India said that these steps cannot hide the serious violations of human rights, political repression, economic exploitation and lack of freedom in those areas.

The Foreign Ministry again said that Pakistan should vacate these illegally occupied areas of India. The so-called Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, formed in 2009, has 33 seats. All this is happening amidst the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan regarding Jammu and Kashmir, recently India had rejected the mention of this area in the joint statement of China and Pakistan as unnecessary.
