It may sound strange to hear that the surgery of a woman in India was done by a doctor sitting in China, but this has really happened. In Hyderabad it is being seen as a medical miracle. Here a woman’s surgery was done by a doctor sitting 3,900 kilometers away from her in Wuhan, China. This difficult but successful surgery was performed by Indian urologist Dr. Syed Mohammad Ghaus; He is a senior urologist at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Hyderabad and was in Wuhan at that time.
A 57-year-old woman was suffering from ureteric obstruction and underwent tele-surgery with the help of a robot from Wuhan. Dr. Gaus was in Wuhan at that time to attend a conference, but this did not stop him from performing the surgery. An assistant was deployed near the patient in Hyderabad, so that better coordination could be maintained and immediate help could be provided in case of any emergency. The surgery went off without any complications and was over in 90 minutes.

What was the problem?
Dr. Gaus said that it was actually a ureteric reimplantation, which was planned for a patient who had the problem of ureteric obstruction. What is ureteric obstruction? This is a tube that connects the kidney to the urinary bladder. In the case of this particular patient, this tube was blocked. He is also the Director of Robotic and Minimal Access Urological Surgery at AINU Hyderabad.
This blocked tube was reattached to the bladder, which is known as ureteric reimplantation. Usually, we routinely perform this procedure in our operation theater with the help of a robot and a console, in which the console is placed right next to the patient. But this time we expanded it to Wuhan. This happened because I was called there for a conference. 4-5 other surgeons were also present there, who performed tele-surgery (remote surgery) from there in their respective countries. I also performed the surgery on this patient from there and it was completely successful. After surgery the patient recovered and went home.
