The high prices of Indian vegetables available at Indian grocery stores in America often surprise people. Many times there are reasons behind these prices which people generally do not think about. Something similar has come to light among people these days, which has surprised everyone. Recently, an Indian man living in America shared a video on social media, which caught the attention of people on the internet. In the video, he showed a unique snack being sold in an American supermarket, seeing which even he himself was shocked. This snack is very normal, in fact it was the ordinary bhindi made in almost every house in India.
The video was shared on Instagram with an account named @ashishahuja.usa. In the video, the man is seen standing in front of the shelf of a store and pointing to a small packet at the people, saying that it is the same okra which is commonly cooked and eaten as a vegetable in India. However, it has been presented in a different style in America. Here ladyfinger is fried, packed with spices and sold as a premium snack.
How much is okra in America?
The most surprising thing was its price. In the video, he told that the price of a small packet of 85 grams of this snack is 6.50 US dollars. In Indian currency this amount is equal to approximately Rs 600. Even he himself seemed surprised to see such a high price for such a small quantity. He jokingly compared it on the basis of kilos and said that if one kilo of okra is purchased at this rate, its price can reach around Rs 7,250. It is natural for any Indian to be shocked after hearing this figure, because in India, ladyfinger is generally counted among the very cheap and easily available vegetables.
In the video, he further gave examples of other snacks available in the American market. He said that in the same store, a large packet of popular chips like Lay’s was available for about $2.50. Other normal snacks and chips were also easily available between 2 to 4 dollars. In such a situation, he found it quite interesting that only 85 grams of ladyfinger snack was being sold for $6.50. He also speculated that okra would be cultivated in limited quantities in America, due to which its price could be high. Whereas in India, ladyfinger is grown on a large scale and is available in the markets in almost every season. Therefore, it may be a little difficult for Indian people to understand how the same Bhindi became such an expensive snack in another country.
The caption written along with the video also entertained people a lot. He jokingly wrote that in India, ladyfinger, which people eat as a normal vegetable, in America has become a premium snack by being packed in a small packet. He laughingly said that it seems as if Bhindi is now collecting personality tax from people with her new identity.
