July 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

During the recent protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi regarding the paper leak case and the resignation of the Education Minister, the issue of lathicharge by the police on the protesters has been continuously heated up. The opposition party is demanding action against lathicharge, pellet gun and barbaric actions on students. So now the police has also come in a retaliatory mood and has sought permission to protest for a day. During the demonstration, a large number of police and paramilitary security forces were injured in the attacks by the protesters.

Delhi Police Federation sent a letter to the Police Commissioner on Monday, seeking permission to hold a peaceful protest for a day at Jantar Mantar on July 31. In its letter, the federation has requested for permission to organize the protest from 11 am to 5 pm.

There will be a non-violent protest on 31st

It has also been said in the letter that last week on July 20, a large number of officers and soldiers of Delhi Police and paramilitary forces got seriously and moderately injured while on duty in and around Jantar Mantar. The federation said that this protest is proposed by retired Delhi policemen and law abiding citizens. It will be organized in a completely peaceful and non-violent manner.

Letter

Earlier recently, quoting sources related to Delhi Police, it was reported that during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on July 20, 130 policemen (police and RAF personnel) were injured in a violent clash between the protesters and the police, out of which the condition of many is critical. Many police officers are also included among the injured. Around 65 students were also injured. Police registered 15 FIRs in the case of spreading violence.

Violence broke out during the Chalo Sansad march

During the Chalo Sansad march, security personnel used batons and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd to stop the protesters trying to move towards Parliament. People were injured from both sides due to this.

Meanwhile, during the hearing on the petition related to police lathi charge on the protesters, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) can be formed to ensure fair, transparent and thorough investigation of all the incidents of violence that took place during the student protests.

The court said that if the prescribed protocol is violated, the law should take its course. CJI Surya Kant said, “Action should be taken against whoever has committed excesses or taken the law into his own hands.” On the arguments of the lawyers, the bench said that an impartial and independent investigation is necessary into all the allegations related to police excesses against the protesting students.

The court also said that the attacks on 250 policemen should also be investigated and it should be found out whether these attacks were carried out by students or by some unruly elements. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also said that students may not have been involved in violence against policemen, although some miscreants were definitely involved in these incidents. The miscreants, wanted in murder, rape and NDPS cases, joined the protests and resorted to violence against policemen.
