Investors suffer huge loss in stock market, Rs 1.10 lakh crore lost

July 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Today (July 28, 2026) an atmosphere of extreme laziness and volatility was seen in the stock market. Under the pressure of monthly expiry, the market neither made any big jump nor fell much. But amid this seemingly calm business, investors have suffered a major shock. After a day’s trading, both Sensex and Nifty closed in the red. Even this seemingly minor fall has wiped out more than Rs 1.10 lakh crore from the pockets of stock market investors.

Rs 1.10 lakh crore lost in a single day

The total market cap of all the companies listed in the stock market was at the level of Rs 4,80,33,146 crore a trading day earlier i.e. on July 27. By market close today, this figure fell to Rs 4,79,22,258 crore. If we understand it in simple words, then in today’s slow business there has been a big dent of Rs 1,10,887 crore in the total wealth of investors. If we look at the broader level of the market, light buying was seen in midcap shares today, but the smallcap index appeared completely defeated under the selling pressure.

IT sector got support, banking sector battered

Mainly the IT and real estate sectors tried to handle today’s falling market. The Nifty IT index registered a strong rise of more than 3 percent, while the realty sector also closed with a rise of more than 2 percent. On the other hand, shares of FMCG and public sector banks (PSU Banks) completely spoiled the mood of the market. A weakness of more than 1 percent was seen in Nifty FMCG. Apart from this, Nifty PSU Bank index fell by 1 percent and Private Bank index fell by 0.40 percent.

Slow movement of Sensex-Nifty

Talking about the benchmark indices, they were traded in a very limited range throughout the day. Sensex closed at 76,765.92 with a slight fall of 69.86 points (0.09%). At the same time, Nifty 50 also showed a slight slip of 10.60 points (0.09%) and stopped at the level of 23,985.35. During trading, the Sensex at one time jumped 152 points to reach 76,988, but could not hold on to the upper levels. Nifty also made a high of 24,041, but in the end profit booking pushed the market into the red.

There was strong action in these shares

Out of the 30 leading stocks included in the Sensex, 17 managed to close in the green today. Shares like TCS, Zomato and Tech Mahindra gained the most, which made investors profitable. On the contrary, the biggest decline was recorded in the shares of Hindustan Unilever (HUL), BEL and NTPC. A total of 4424 shares were traded on BSE today. Out of these, 109 shares touched their one-year high (52-week high), while 84 shares fell to their 52-week low.
