Justice Sheel Nagu has recused himself from hearing the new petition filed against former Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma, who is involved in the cash recovery case. Now the matter has been sent to Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant. After which the CJI will decide which new bench will hear the case. This PIL has been filed by Supreme Court lawyer Ghanshyam Upadhyay.

In March last year, the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sanjeev Khanna, had constituted an inquiry committee of three judges to investigate the matter. The chairman of this committee was Chief Justice of Punjab-Haryana High Court Sheel Nagu. Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Karnataka High Court Judge Anu Sivaraman were its members. Now Justice Sheel Nagu has recused himself from hearing this case.

Cash was found from Yashwant Verma’s residence

Last year (2025) in March, on the night of Holi, a fire broke out in a storeroom of former Justice Yashwant Verma’s official residence in Delhi. After the fire was extinguished, police and fire personnel recovered a huge amount of cash there, some of which were burnt notes. After this controversy, Justice Verma was transferred to Allahabad High Court. Besides, he was also separated from judicial work. After this he resigned. He submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu.

impeachment motion brought

After the cash was found, the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court formed an in-house investigation committee. This committee had recommended the removal of Verma from the post. Justice Verma was not ready to resign from his post. In such a situation, the process of impeachment was started against him in the Parliament. In July 2025, impeachment motions were brought against him in both houses of Parliament with the support of 145 members of the Lok Sabha and 63 members of the Rajya Sabha. However, he later resigned.
