The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet against four former members of the banned organization ‘Popular Front of India’ (PFI) in the high-profile Ramalingam murder case. He is accused of helping the ‘proclaimed criminals’ involved in the murder escape the law by giving them shelter for a long time.
The National Investigation Agency, in the charge sheet filed in the special NIA court in Poonamallee on Saturday, has accused K. Mohideen, Mohammad Imran, Tamim Ansari and Asmat were made accused. According to the investigating agency, these four people knowingly provided shelter to the attackers and conspirators who were involved in the deadly attack on Ramalingam in Thirubhuvanam.
‘Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act’ in chargesheet [UA(P) Act] Along with Section 19 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 61(2) and 249 of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) have also been cited. NIA says this attack was not just a case of murder of one person; Its purpose was to incite communal tension in the area and create an atmosphere of fear.
Ramalingam was murdered on 5 February 2019.
According to the agency, Ramalingam was killed on February 5, 2019, when he allegedly protested against forced conversion activities near Paku Vinayakam Thoppu area. He had an argument with people associated with PFI, after which he was fatally attacked. The NIA investigation revealed that the declared criminals involved in the murder were Mohammad Burhanuddin and Mohammad Nabil Hasan.
It is alleged that despite knowing about this, these four accused gave him shelter at different places for about six years. The agency alleges that the absconding accused managed to escape from the law this entire time.
Further action will be taken on the basis of evidence
Earlier, the NIA had filed a chargesheet in this case against 18 accused, including six declared criminals. Later, the agency arrested four absconding accused. Apart from this, charge sheets have also been filed against Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Imthatullah for harboring criminals in May 2025 and February 2026 respectively. NIA has said that the investigation of the case is ongoing and further action will be taken on the basis of new information and evidence.
