India’s defense manufacturing and ‘self-reliant India’ campaign has got a historic success. The first ‘Made in India’ C-295 Military Transport Aircraft, completely manufactured at the ‘Tata-Airbus’ facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, has taken its first successful flight in the sky. This historic test flight is being considered a game-changer for India’s Military Aviation Ambitions. This is the first time in the history of Indian aviation that a military aircraft has been manufactured in India by the country’s private sector.
Why is this success special?
- First big leap of private sector: This partnership between Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) and European giant Airbus is writing a new chapter of defense production in India.
- Air Force will get strength: This aircraft will replace the aging Avro-748 fleet of the Indian Air Force.
- Boon for difficult areas: Equipped with two turboprop engines, this aircraft is capable of taking off and landing even from extremely rough and short runways, which will make it easier to deliver supplies and water to the army in hilly and remote border areas.

40 aircraft will be made in India under the deal
India had signed a deal with Airbus for a total of 56 C-295 aircraft worth about Rs 21,935 crore. As per the agreement, the initial 16 aircraft have been brought to India directly from Spain in ‘fly-away’ condition, while the remaining 40 aircraft are being completely manufactured at the same Tata-Airbus plant in Vadodara.
This aircraft flying from Vadodara is the first great achievement of this ‘Make in India’ project. The Indian Air Force has also congratulated the entire team on this success and said that this success shows India’s growing strength in the aerospace sector and will give a new height to the country’s defense preparedness.
