More than one thousand Indians returned from America, defense cooperation with Russia is strengthening – MEA

June 5, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal gave information on many important issues in the press conference on Friday and answered many questions. Among these important issues, India-Russia defense relations, American deportation and return of Bangladeshi citizens were important. On the question related to India-Russia defense relations and Su-57 fighter jet program, Jaiswal said that India’s defense relations with Russia have been strong for a long time. However, he asked to approach the Defense Ministry for detailed information related to this special program.

On the deportation of Indian citizens from America, Jaiswal said that so far this year, 1,076 Indian citizens have been sent back from America, whereas last year this number was 3,567. He said that discussions are going on between the two countries regarding migration and mobility, in which the focus is on curbing illegal migration and ensuring that there is no negative impact on legal migration.

Strict stance on Bangladeshi citizens

Regarding dealing with other foreigners including Bangladeshi citizens living in India illegally, Jaiswal made it clear that India has laws and action will be taken against them.

He told that there is a bilateral arrangement for deportation, under which India sends such cases to the Bangladeshi side for confirmation of citizenship. The process of sending back starts only after receiving the confirmation. Jaiswal said that several applications are still pending with the Bangladeshi side and India hopes that these will be processed soon, so that the deportation process can go on smoothly.

Bangladesh should identify suspected Bangladeshis

The Ministry of External Affairs had said last month that India has asked Bangladesh to verify the citizenship of more than 2,860 suspected Bangladeshis living in the country illegally.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments in border states such as Tripura, West Bengal and Assam have prioritized tackling the problem of undocumented migrants and have focused on sending illegal immigrants back to Bangladesh (so-called “push back”).
