Money laundering case: Big blow to Hemant Soren, court rejects discharge application

June 8, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The special PMLA court of Ranchi has given a big blow to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The court has rejected his discharge petition filed in the money laundering case. This matter is related to the investigation of money laundering case of ED i.e. Enforcement Directorate. On behalf of Hemant Soren, a demand was made from the court that the proceedings going on against him should be ended and he should be freed from the case.

There was a long debate on this petition from both sides. The oral arguments were completed on 2 May 2026, while on 8 May 2026, both the parties also filed their written arguments in the court. Special advocate Zoheb Hussain presented the side on behalf of ED, while senior advocate Meenakshi Arora presented arguments on behalf of Hemant Soren. After hearing all the parties, the court of Special Judge Yogesh Kumar rejected Hemant Soren’s discharge petition. After this decision of the court, further judicial proceedings will continue against him in the case.

What is the matter?

The special court, which reserved its decision after hearing the arguments of both the parties, said that there are enough grounds to take the case forward at this stage. In such a situation, the court refused to acquit Soren from the proceedings. The court accepted that further judicial inquiry into the records and allegations placed before it was necessary. This cleared the way for the case to move towards trial.

This case pertains to 8.86 acres of land in Shanti Nagar in Badgai area of Ranchi. This is also related to the alleged money laundering of the earnings related to this property. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating this case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). CM Soren has been made an accused in this case.
