The Supreme Court has proposed to create a special court for fast track trial in Manipur violence cases. The court said that in view of the huge delay in the investigation, daily hearings may be required. The bench led by CJI Surya Kant gave this order while reviewing the new status report of CBI, SIT and court-appointed monitor Dattatreya Padsalgikar.
The court said that after the completion of the investigation, consideration will be given to forming a special court in consultation with the Manipur government and the Manipur and Guwahati High Courts. The Supreme Court also directed the state government to provide full cooperation to the CBI and SIT in dealing with the challenges faced in the investigation.
‘There should be no encroachment on legitimate religious structures’
The Supreme Court has directed that in violence-hit Manipur, no encroachment will be allowed in places where legitimate religious structures previously existed. Considering the report and two videos of Justice Geeta Mittal Committee, the bench headed by CJI Surya Kant gave this direction. The bench said that no further encroachment should be allowed in those places where legitimate religious structures existed before they were damaged during the caste violence.
Lawyer Shahrukh Alam said today that in the demolition that took place, everything was looted, even the ownership documents. Some churches are also being used as gyms. Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that there should be no more encroachment. This is the main concern.
Committee’s tenure extended
CJI Surya Kant said that the committee headed by Justice Geeta Mittal has submitted its report and two videos. The committee will ensure that wherever a legal structure existed, that place is not encroached upon. The Supreme Court has directed that no further encroachment will be allowed at such places. The Supreme Court also extended the tenure of the committee headed by Justice Geeta Mittal till March 31.
