Story of Kokila Vrat: Kokila fast is considered to have special significance in Sanatan Dharma. This fast has been dedicated to the nightingale form of Goddess Parvati. There is a religious belief that by observing this fast, married women attain unbroken good fortune. Not only this, this fast is also a boon for unmarried girls. It is believed that due to the effect of this fast, unmarried girls get their desired groom. According to Drik Panchang, this year Kokila Vrat will be observed on 28th August. The full moon of Saavan month will also be celebrated on this day.

Once Goddess Sati took the form of a cuckoo and performed penance for thousands of years. This Kokila fast reminds us of the difficult penance of Mother Sati. For this reason, an idol of a cuckoo made of clay is worshiped during this fast. It is said that the reason behind Mother Sati taking the form of Kokila i.e. Cuckoo was a curse given by Lord Shiva. In such a situation, let us know the story of Kokila fast.

according to legend…

According to the legend, King Daksh, father of Mata Sati, had organized a yagya, in which he had invited all the gods and goddesses, but did not invite Mata Sati and Mahadev. When Goddess Sati came to know about this, she started insisting on Mahadev to go to the Yagya. Lord Shiva explained a lot to Sati that it was not right to go to this Yagya without being invited, but Mother Sati disobeyed Mahadev and went to the Yagya.

cursed to live as a cuckoo

As soon as Mother Sati reached the yagya of her father Daksh, her father insulted her and her husband i.e. Lord Shiva a lot. Mother could not bear the insult of Mahadev and jumped into the fire of Yagya Kund. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he gave death sentence to Daksh. Also, for disobeying Mother Sati, she was cursed to live as a cuckoo for thousands of years.

It is said that due to this curse of Lord Shiva, Goddess Sati lived her life as a cuckoo in the Nandan forest for thousands of years. Then he was born as Mother Parvati and attained Lord Shiva.
