
Madhya Pradesh government will present the draft of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in a special cabinet meeting on 19 July 2026. After the draft is approved in this meeting to be held in Jagdishpur near Bhopal, it will be introduced as a bill in the monsoon session of the Assembly starting from July 20.
According to sources, this will happen and it will be recommended to keep tribals out of the purview of MP. ucc One of the biggest recommendations of the draft is that the Scheduled Tribes (ST) of the state should be kept out of the scope of this law, so that their traditional and cultural system is protected.
Know what is special in UCC law
- Complete ban on polygamy: After the implementation of this law, there is a provision in the state to completely ban more than one marriage without legal divorce i.e. polygamy.
- Girls have equal rights in property: In matters of inheritance and ancestral property, arrangements have been made to give equal legal rights to girls (daughters) as sons.
- Compulsory registration of live-in relationships: In this draft, for the first time, it is proposed to bring live-in relationships under a clear legal framework and make their registration mandatory.
- Marriage and Divorce Rules One for All: Uniform rules will apply in family matters related to marriage, divorce and maintenance for citizens of all religions.
- The rules for adoption will also be the same: Legal processes related to child adoption will also be made transparent and uniform for all communities.
- Share and security of children in parents’ property: The draft includes suggestions for both parents’ share in children’s property and legal protection against children leaving elderly parents destitute.
- Draft prepared by high level expert committee: This detailed draft has been prepared in 3 volumes (parts) after extensive study by a 6-member committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.
- Huge public support and suggestions: The committee received more than 9.58 lakh suggestions and feedback from the public and various organizations through the Madhya Pradesh UCC portal and district-level meetings, which have been incorporated in the draft.
- Madhya Pradesh will become the next state after Uttarakhand: If this UCC bill is passed in this monsoon session of the Assembly, then after Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh will become another major BJP-ruled state in the country to implement UCC law.
