Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant has responded to the time-wasting comments in the hearing related to lathi charge on students. He said, if there was any formal petition before me, I would definitely hear it. “Just writing a letter demanding a hearing is not the right way.”
CJI said that the Supreme Court is for every citizen of the country. Anyone can go to court for their rights, but for this a certain procedure and rules have to be followed. CJI clarified that it is wrong to say that the Supreme Court refused to hear the case. The CJI stressed that the Supreme Court is for every citizen and will not allow injustice to anyone.
Petition formally filed now
According to the CJI, no formal petition was actually filed before him regarding the Jantar Mantar protests. Demanding immediate hearing merely on the basis of a letter or application is not in accordance with judicial procedure. CJI said that petitions should be filed in the Supreme Court only by following the prescribed rules and procedures. Subsequently, when the petition was formally filed and mentioned before the bench, it was accepted and the legal process would be followed.
Gave confidence to youth and citizens
Assuring the youth and citizens of the country, the CJI said that if injustice is done to anyone, the Supreme Court will hear their complaint within the ambit of law and procedure and will try to ensure complete justice. The CJI further said that the judiciary is always ready to solve the problems and troubles of the people.
Refutation of reports denying hearing
Earlier today, the CJI refuted media reports which claimed that he had refused to list for hearing a petition related to police action against student protesters during the ‘Parliament March’. CJI clarified that no writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court regarding this matter; Only one letter was sent.
