Tension in the Middle East is once again at its peak. Israeli attacks in Lebanon are showing no sign of stopping, while Iran has warned of the formation of a ‘New Security Belt’ in the entire region. The military campaign of the Israeli Army (IDF) against Hezbollah has intensified and despite American pressure, Israel is not ready to retreat. Since the ceasefire in April 2026, Israel has carried out more than 3,400 air strikes on southern Lebanon.
Reports suggest that this ceasefire was just an illusion. The IDF has clearly stated that their campaign against Hezbollah will continue for a long time. Carpet bombing is being done in the mountainous areas of southern Lebanon, due to which the entire area has been turned into debris. Recently, five people were killed and more than 20 were injured in an airstrike in Al-Masakin area of Tayer city, including paramedical staff. This attack was carried out near the Red Cross centre.
Israel has issued an ultimatum to immediately evacuate many new towns and residential areas including Zakak al-Mufti. Defense Minister Katz has warned that if Hezbollah retaliates, Beirut will have to face even worse destruction.
Hezbollah responded
Hezbollah also does not seem to be backing down. It has released a video claiming that an Israeli Merkava tank near the historic Beaufort Fort was targeted by an FPV drone. It is clear from this that the ground conflict can become more severe.
Human rights organizations have alleged that Israel is using white phosphorus in southern Lebanon, which is controversial under international laws. This explosive produces heat up to 1300°C, sticks to the skin and is not extinguished by water. Organizations have demanded an international investigation, while Israel is denying these allegations and saying that it is following legal rules.
Iran’s ‘New Security Belt’ threat
The biggest threat has come from Iran. Ismail Kani, head of Iran’s Quds Force, has warned that a new security belt is emerging in West Asia, whose custodian is Iran.
This security belt will extend from the Strait of Hormuz to Bab al-Mandeb, which is the world’s most important maritime trade route. Iran has made it clear that if Israel does not stop attacks in Lebanon, then all its allies can attack together. This ‘security belt’ includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi in Yemen, Shia militia in Iraq and Iran-backed networks in Syria.
Who is threatened by Iran’s threat?
This threat from Iran has created panic in the entire region. These major areas and routes have come under threat. The Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, Bab al-Mandeb, oil supplies and energy trade, container shipping and global supply chains are at risk.
Trump-Netanyahu clash
Amidst all this, differences between US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu have come to the surface. Reports suggest that Trump’s biggest fear is that if a full-scale war starts, he will not be able to save America’s allies in the Arab world from destruction. However, despite all warnings, Netanyahu is continuing his military action
This fire burning in Lebanon can now engulf the entire West Asia. On one hand Israel and Hezbollah are adamant on continuing the attacks till the end, while on the other hand Iran has warned of regional war. If this explosive situation continues, global oil supplies, maritime trade and the security of the entire Middle East could be in serious jeopardy.
