Google Search Vs AI: Recently a big discussion started on the internet regarding a new AI feature of Google. Reports claimed that in the future, the company may show AI-based answers directly instead of traditional search results. This discussion started when a feature was seen in Chrome Canary which was sending search queries directly to AI mode. However, now Google has clarified on this matter and said that it was only an internal testing and the company is not planning to remove traditional search results at the moment.
Why did AI Mode feature create a stir?
The whole matter came to light when some users noticed a hidden feature named “Fulfil Searchbox Queries in AI Mode” inside Chrome Canary. According to the report, activating this option took the user directly into AI mode instead of showing the normal list of search results. There, instead of links, answers prepared by AI were visible in the style of a conversation. The special thing was that the feature seemed quite developed and many of its shortcuts were also working properly. For this reason, many people felt that Google was soon preparing to change its traditional search experience.
Google gave clarification
After the online discussion increased, Google immediately clarified the situation. Google Vice President of Search Engineering Rajan Patel said that this feature was not for public use and was only part of internal testing. He clearly wrote on social media platform X that Google has no plans to change Chrome search to AI mode by default. According to the company, this was a technical mistake, due to which this feature became visible to some users. Google also indicated that traditional search results will still remain an important part of its search experience.
Increasing concern of publishers and content creators
Even though Google has termed this matter as a mistake, this incident has sparked a new debate about the future of AI based search. Publishers and content creators around the world are already opposing AI search features. They say that AI systems generate answers using their content, but do not send users to the original website. Currently, in traditional Google search, links to source websites also appear along with AI summaries. If in the future users start accessing AI conversational interfaces directly, traffic to news websites, blogs and review platforms may reduce. This can also have a big impact on the earnings of media organizations and content creators.
