The recent military attacks between Iran and Israel in the Middle East tension have increased concern all over the world. Although this ‘mini war’ has now stopped, it has brought to the fore the conflict of interests between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The differences between the two leaders have increased to such an extent that Trump clearly told Netanyahu that if Israel continues retaliatory attacks on Iran, it may end up alone in this war. What is the reason behind this threat of Trump and how America protects Israel, we will know further in this article.
On the night of June 7, Iran attacked Israel. Soon after, Trump spoke to Netanyahu on the phone and asked him not to retaliate. Trump’s argument was that he would make a big deal with Iran in the coming days, due to which the attacks would have no significance. He also said that if the deal is not made then America is ready for war and will take command of further attacks.
But Netanyahu did not follow Trump’s advice. He said that if Israel remains silent, Iran will gain the upper hand and a wrong message will be sent. Netanyahu started attacks on Iran. After this, on June 8, Trump again called Netanyahu and said in a stern tone, “Bibi, you be careful, otherwise soon you will be left alone in this fight.”
Trump made it clear that if Israel’s attacks turn into a major war, he will have to fight the war with Iran alone. Netanyahu asked in response, “If we stop the attacks, will Iran also stop?” Trump replied yes, after which Netanyahu stopped the attacks for the time being, but said that he would not stop further.
What reasoning did Netanyahu give behind the Israeli attack?
Netanyahu has made it clear that Israel has the full right to self-defense. He said, “At the moment we are not firing because Tehran has stopped attacks. If Iran makes the mistake of attacking again, we will give a forceful response.” Reports suggest that Netanyahu is still working on the same plan, under which Israel continued air strikes on Lebanon after the ceasefire, so that Iran could be provoked into war again.
Will America leave Israel?
Reports suggest that Trump is making a strategy to get out of this war. He can present himself as a peacemaker by handing over the responsibility of war to Netanyahu. Even this time America did not completely help Israel in stopping Iranian missiles, although there are two types of reports on this. In a report, the Trump administration did not give any order to stop the missiles coming from Iran. Another report says that the US Army fired interceptors to shoot down some missiles. If the first report is true, Israel’s defense may be weakened.
How does America protect Israel?
Israel’s security is not limited to systems like Iron Dome, Arrow and THAAD. America helps it indirectly in three layers. First layer (tracking and early warning): American radars present in Gulf countries become active as soon as the missile is launched from Iran. They track the thermal signatures of the missiles and send the data to American satellites, which transmit this information directly to Israel’s command center. Israel gets 15 minutes warning before the attack.
Second layer (intercept): Fighter planes like F-16 and F-15 fly from American bases in Iraq and Jordan and destroy suicide drones and cruise missiles in the air. The Patriot system located on the ground targets missiles that pass through their airspace.
Layer 3 (intercepting near Israel): US Navy destroyers deployed in the Mediterranean and Red Sea intercept Iranian ballistic missiles with their missiles. The missiles that survive are destroyed by the Israeli defense system.
That means America itself eliminates almost half the threat. If America stops helping, it will be very difficult for Israel to stop Iranian missiles alone.
Houthi attack and challenges ahead
In the last 24 hours, Iran’s proxy Yemen’s Houthi rebels have attacked southern Israel with drones and missiles. Their primary target is port city Eilat. Although the Houthis have not yet succeeded in causing major damage, the continuous attacks are increasing the pressure on Israel’s stock of interceptor missiles.
Trump and Netanyahu are trapped in a whirlpool from which it is difficult for both of them to get out. On one hand, Israel wants to answer Iran at all costs for its security, while America wants to maintain distance in this war considering its own interests. In the coming weeks it will decide whether the map of the entire Middle East will change or not.
