One who is born in Kalyug is certain to die. Despite this, everyone remains busy in their life’s responsibilities, profession and virtuous deeds. When the last moment of his death comes, a unique tradition is prevalent in the Hindu Sanatan tradition. At the time of departure of the soul from the body, Tulsi and Ganga water are kept in the mouth. There are many religious, spiritual and some scientific reasons for this practice. This is what famous astrologer Dr. Basavaraj Guruji has to say.
According to Guruji, Tulsi is called Vishnupriya, which means it is the most beloved and sacred plant to Vishnu. Ganga water is considered the destroyer of sins and deeds. It is believed that the sins and karma trapped in the body prevent the prana from leaving the body. At this time there is intense pain in the body. On such occasions Tulsi and Ganga water are offered.
The soul is freed from the cycle of birth and death
He said that this method is mentioned in Garuda Purana. This method is adopted only when the doctors are unable to help, the patient is unconscious, unable to eat or drink and is in unbearable pain. In such a situation of pain, it is believed that by pouring Ganga water in the mouth thrice and offering Tulsi, the sins and karma of the body are washed away. Through this the soul becomes free from the cycle of birth and death and attains salvation.
According to Guruji, from a scientific point of view, Tulsi and Ganga water, when entered into the body, can provide some relief to people suffering from respiratory problems. Sometimes they can even help a person recover, but more importantly, it is believed that these sacred substances and plants help the body attain moksha or liberation when the life force stops.
Guruji says that Tulsi is also known as Haripriya. Eating a basil leaf every day is beneficial in many aspects of life. It is believed that by offering Tulsi and Ganga water to the body at the time of death, one gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu and attains Vaikuntha. In the final stages, Yamdoots may appear, but they cannot lift the body in their hands.
Tulsi is a source of fear for Yamdoots.
He said that it is believed that Tulsi is a source of fear for Yamdoots. By offering Tulsi, the soul can easily complete its next journey without the messengers of Yama. When Ganga water enters the body at the time of death, every part of the body attains salvation, the body becomes purified and attains divinity. Guruji advised that this is a good way for the soul to take its place and enter into another soul.
