June 9, 2026 by Uma Shankar

A powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude that occurred in the Philippines on June 8 has caused massive devastation. The death toll has increased to 41. Four people are still reported missing, while more than 500 people have been injured. This was the most dangerous earthquake in the Philippines in the last 50 years, due to which 20 thousand people had to leave their homes. These people are currently forced to live in relief camps. Rescue workers continued searching for people trapped in collapsed buildings even on Tuesday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea near Mindanao, the second largest island of the Philippines. After the earthquake, thousands of people came out of their homes fearing a tsunami. In the Philippines, sea waves were recorded up to 1.4 meters higher than normal. However, the tsunami did not cause major damage. Its small waves also reached Indonesia, Palau and southern Japan. During the earthquake, a grandmother saved her child’s life by holding the curtain. The 36 storey tall building was seen shaking like a swing. The scary scene of devastation can be seen in the pictures and videos…

More damage due to building collapse and landslide

Most of the damage was caused by falling buildings and landslides. In the city of General Santos, 13 people died due to falling buildings and debris. This city is considered the capital of the tuna fish industry of the Philippines. At the same time, in Glan town of Sarangani province, many houses were buried due to landslide, due to which 18 people lost their lives. The remaining deaths occurred in South Cotabato, Davao Occidental and Balut Island.

Schools were opened after two months

The earthquake occurred on the day when schools across the country opened after two months of summer vacations. Many injured students were present in the school during the morning programme. About 6,000 government buildings will be inspected, only after that studies will resume. Officials have warned that the cracked buildings may collapse at any time due to the continuous tremors.

Powerful earthquake in Philippines after 50 years

This is believed to be the most powerful earthquake in the Philippines since 1976. In 1976, an earthquake of 8.1 magnitude and tsunami occurred in the same area, in which about 8,000 people died. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has sent senior officials to the affected areas to oversee relief and rescue operations.

America, France, Japan and New Zealand have also offered help to the Philippines. The Philippines is located in the Ring of Fire region of the Pacific Ocean, so earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently here.
