Government employees will be in trouble! There may be a big increase in HRA in the 8th Pay Commission

July 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The eyes of lakhs of central government employees are fixed on the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. It is believed that in the new pay commission, not only the basic salary will increase, but the allowances related to it will also increase. The most important among these is House Rent Allowance (HRA), which is decided on the basis of the basic salary of the employee. In such a situation, if the fitment factor increases then the HRA of the employees will also automatically increase.

How much HRA is available at present?

Under the 7th Pay Commission, HRA is given according to the category of cities. Currently, 30% HRA is available in X category (metro) cities, 20% in Y category cities and 10% in Z category cities. Initially these rates were 27%, 18% and 9% respectively, but after Dearness Allowance (DA) became 50% in January 2024, they were increased to 30%, 20% and 10%. Now employee organizations are also demanding further increase in HRA rates.

How much HRA can level-4 employees get?

If the current basic salary of a level-4 employee is Rs 25,500, then if 2.0 to 2.57 fitment factor is applied in the 8th Pay Commission, his new basic salary can be between Rs 51,000 to Rs 65,530.

What is the estimate for Level-5 employees?

The revised basic salary of a level-5 employee with a basic salary of Rs 29,200 can reach Rs 75,040. In this situation, HRA can be around Rs 22,510 per month in X category cities, Rs 15,010 in Y category and Rs 7,500 in Z category. However, it will entirely depend on which fitment factor is approved by the government.

Level-6 employees can get HRA up to Rs 27,290

For a Level-6 employee with a basic salary of Rs 35,400, it is estimated that if 2.57 fitment factor is applied, his basic salary can increase to Rs 90,980. In such a situation, employees posted in

The final decision is in the hands of the Commission and the Government.

At present, all these figures are estimates based on different possible fitment factors. The 8th Pay Commission has not yet presented its final recommendations and the new pay structure will be implemented only after the approval of the government. Therefore, the employees will have to wait for the final decision. However, it is believed that if there is an increase in the basic salary, there may be a significant increase in HRA also.
