
Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, died on Saturday at the age of 85. He was admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru due to difficulty in breathing. She was admitted in the ICU since July 15 and was undergoing treatment under the supervision of specialist doctors. He was being looked after by Dr. Satyanarayan, but despite continuous treatment, his condition could not improve and finally he breathed his last.
After Chennamma’s demise, dignitaries and relatives are flocking to Manipal Hospital to pay their last respects to her. In view of the arrival of JDS workers, police security has been increased near the hospital as a precautionary measure. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh visited the spot and took stock of the security arrangements.
Married to Deve Gowda in 1954
Chennamma of Hirehalli in Muttige district of Hassan taluk was married to HD Deve Gowda on May 25, 1954. The couple has four sons and two daughters, including HD Revanna, HD Balakrishna, HD Ramesh Gowda, HD Kumaraswamy, Shailaja and Anusuya.
Chennamma was the cornerstone of Deve Gowda’s political career and played the role of a strong wife by supporting the family so that Deve Gowda, who was busy in politics, did not have to bear the burden of the family. Along with raising six children, she was also an ideal housewife and also took the responsibility of their education.
Chennamma was attacked with acid
In February 2001, Chennamma was attacked with acid while returning from offering prayers at a temple in Hardanahalli. She was seriously injured in this incident, but recovered after treatment. Deve Gowda and Kalamma’s eldest daughter Chennamma had by then completed her SSLC education. Being the eldest daughter of the family, she played an important role in the upbringing of her four younger brothers and three younger sisters.
